Quarry Bank Mill

On the 18th of November we went back in time to 1847, using a slightly larger, 54 seater version of the Back to the Future Delorean. Whilst the rest of the school was struggling to keep the rising flood water out of school, we had a tour of the old mill worker’s village of Styal and learned first hand about the working conditions and dangers of life as a child in Victorian mills.

After our mill work, we had to keep up with the times following the 1833 Child Labour Act and headed for some school work at the Apprentice House. The chamber pots under the bed were a little unpleasant, but we left with an excellent understanding of just how much times have changed.
